Why State Taxes Matter for Physicians
State income taxes can change take-home pay substantially. Progressive rates apply only to income in each bracket; a top marginal rate does not apply to your entire salary.
States With No Income Tax
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming, and New Hampshire do not tax wage income. Other taxes may still apply.
Important Considerations
State tax is only one factor. States without income tax often have higher property taxes or sales taxes. Cost of living, malpractice insurance rates, physician demand, and quality of life all matter when choosing where to practice.
Estimates use 2026 federal rates and 2026 state wage brackets updated September 18. Actual liability depends on deductions, credits, and progressive bracket structures. This calculator is for informational purposes only and does not constitute tax advice.
