Additional Job Description:

Chief of Pediatric Urology

A Leadership Opportunity to Build, Transform, and Define the Future of Pediatric Urologic Care

/A System Built for the Future of Pediatric Urology

Across the United States, the future of pediatric urologic care will be defined by leaders who can integrate clinical excellence, academic innovation, and meaningful access to care. WVU Medicine is uniquely positioned to lead that future-and we are seeking a visionary physician to serve as our next Chief of Pediatric Urology. This role is designed for a physician leader who is driven not only by clinical excellence, but by the opportunity to build a program that advances access, elevates outcomes, and delivers meaningful impact for children and families across a multi-state region.

As Chief, you will lead the strategic development and clinical integration of Pediatric Urology services across the WVU Medicine network. You will partner closely with institutional leadership to expand subspecialty capabilities, optimize care delivery models, and further integrate pediatric urologic services within a multidisciplinary framework. This includes alignment with pediatric surgery, nephrology, oncology, and broader women's and children's services-ensuring comprehensive, coordinated care for complex conditions.

This is a role for a builder and a leader-someone who thrives in an environment where growth, innovation, and collaboration are not just encouraged, but expected. You will play a central role in recruiting and mentoring faculty, expanding the clinical footprint, and supporting the development of APP teams to enhance access and continuity of care. With strong institutional support and a clear vision for growth, the Chief will help define what pediatric urologic care looks like for the future of WVU Medicine.

As the state's largest health system and the academic medical enterprise of West Virginia University, WVU Medicine has built a platform designed not only to deliver exceptional care today, but to transform how pediatric subspecialty care is delivered across an entire region.

This is more than a leadership role-it is an opportunity to build, expand, and define the future of pediatric urology across Appalachia and beyond.

Qualifications & Leadership Attributes
  • MD or DO degree (or foreign equivalent) with eligibility for an unrestricted state medical license
  • Completion of an ACGME accredited Urology residency and fellowship training in Pediatric Urology; must be board-certified or board-eligible
  • All clinical and credentialing requirements met prior to appointment
  • Demonstrated commitment to delivering exceptional, compassionate, and family-centered pediatric care
  • Proven ability to lead within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment, fostering alignment across physicians, APPs, and clinical staff
  • Experience building or expanding clinical programs, with a focus on access, growth, and sustainability
  • Track record of advancing clinical quality, patient outcomes, and safety initiatives
  • Ability to balance strategic vision with clinical excellence, serving as both a leader and practicing physician
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage, inspire, and develop teams
  • Commitment to academic advancement, education, and/or research, consistent with WVU Medicine's academic mission

  • /Meet the Chair

Over the past year, Steven Campbell, MD, PhD, has brought transformational leadership to WVU Medicine's Department of Urology. Since joining the institution, he has significantly strengthened and expanded subspecialty divisions, while more than doubling the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) workforce-enhancing access, supporting physician teams, and advancing the system's ability to deliver high-quality, specialized urologic care across the region.

Prior to WVU Medicine, Dr. Campbell built a distinguished career at the Cleveland Clinic, where he served as a board-certified urologist, Vice Chair of Urology, Residency Program Director, and Professor of Surgery. Over a 20-year tenure, he led the largest urology residency training program in the United States and played a central role in the Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program.

Dr. Campbell's clinical and academic interests focus on renal cell carcinoma, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, and surgical education. He is a nationally recognized expert in the field, having authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and serving as lead author of the American Urological Association Guidelines for the Management of Kidney Cancer. During his time at Cleveland Clinic, he also contributed to the renal cell carcinoma medical genetics program, treating thousands of patients with complex genitourinary malignancies.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Campbell held leadership roles across several leading institutions, including co-director of Urologic Oncology at Loyola University Medical Center, Chief of Urology at the Hines Veterans Affairs Hospital in Maywood, Illinois, and co-director of the Division of Urological Oncology at Northwestern University.

He completed his urology residency at Cleveland Clinic, followed by a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Campbell earned his MD, PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology, and undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago.

/A Leadership Role with System-Wide Impact

Under the leadership of Dr. Steven Campbell, MD, PhD, Chair of Urology, WVU Medicine is advancing a unified academic vision that bridges tertiary care, community integration, and subspecialty growth.

The Chief of Pediatric Urology will serve as the clinical, academic, and strategic leader for pediatric urologic services across the health system-anchored by J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and the WVU Medicine Golisano Children's Hospital.

This leader will have the opportunity to:
