Martinsburg VA Medical Center Martinsburg, WV is located approximately 75 miles Northwest of Washington DC and approximately 85 miles Northwest of Baltimore, Maryland. Martinsburg is one of the fastest growing cities in the state. Martinsburg VA Medical Center offers a comprehensive range of services, including internal medicine, ambulatory surgery, audiology and speech pathology, dental, nursing home, nutrition, podiatry, prosthetics, women's health, mental health and rehabilitation medicine. Patient care is provided through an integrated primary care concept, and each veteran is assigned to a team of health care providers that follows the patient's care both as an inpatient and an outpatient.

Martinsburg VA Medical Center is seeking an Interventional Radiologist who wants to join a compassionate team of providers who enjoy caring for our nations Veterans. The Physician is directly accountable to the Chief of Diagnostics.

Position Summary: This physician serves a dual role as a subspecialist interventional radiologist and a diagnostic radiologist determined by workload and patient care needs. Interventional radiology includes a spectrum of diagnostic and therapeutic invasive, image-guided procedures. When not engaged in interventional radiology duties, the incumbent functions as a general diagnostic radiologist and provides a spectrum of image interpretation, fluoroscopic exams and patient care services In addition to clinical practice, other duties include contributions to quality assurance and performance improvement, oversight of technical quality, education of staff and trainees, committee assignments and other activities that support clinical operations and the mission, values and goals of the VA and the Medical Center.

Interventional Radiologist (IR) Duties:

  • Review of IR orders for appropriateness and feasibility, pre-procedure preparation, knowledge and technical skill in image-guided procedures, post-procedure care and appropriate documentation in Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).

  • Coordination of care within the IR team and other pertinent staff within the medical center and external providers.

  • Consultative role involving patient chart and imaging record review, patient assessment and patient management.

Duties also include and are not limited to:

  • Interpret non-invasive vascular studies (US, CTA and MRA). Coverage of basic and advanced vascular US is required, including meeting the interpreting physician CME and case volume requirements of our Imaging Service.

  • Performance of invasive procedures such as invasive catheter-directed thrombolysis, treatment of venous insufficiency, dialysis access interventions, TIPS, embolization for benign and malignant disease including chemoembolization of liver tumors. Experience in Y-90 ablation would be a plus.

  • Performance of invasive non-vascular procedures such as image-guided biopsies and drainages, image-guided tumor ablations, enteral access (G and GJ tube placement), urinary and biliary drainage and other interventions, lumbar punctures, and joint injections.

  • Coordinates patient care by effective communication with Primary Care practitioners at local and remote locations; active participant in resident noon lectures, morning reports, including case presentations and other educational activities; is highly visible and accessible to al customers.

  • Appropriate pre and post-procedural management for the above listed procedures, as well as consultations in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • Occasional daily assignments to other radiology modalities due to staff shortages or other exigencies.

  • Supervision, instruction and evaluation of medical students, diagnostic and interventional radiology residents, and interventional radiology fellows.

  • Other duties, such as attending interdisciplinary conferences and serving on department and facility committees, as assigned by the Chief of Diagnostics.

Recruitment Incentive: May be Authorized.
Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 days paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

Work Schedule: 8am to 4:30pm Monday - Friday

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Board certification required.

  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
