Vandalia Health and its Institute for Academic Medicine seek an accomplished and forward-thinking Chairperson for the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for a proven leader and educator with a passion for transforming health care delivery in rural and resource-constrained communities through innovation, technology, and systems-based thinking.

The ideal candidate is a visionary who can drive excellence in the department's clinical, educational, research and community-facing missions, while championing new models of care tailored to the needs of diverse Appalachian populations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Leadership and Administration - The Chair provides strategic direction for the department, aligning its goals with institutional priorities. They oversee departmental operations, including budgeting, resource allocation, and policy implementation, while ensuring regulatory compliance and accreditation standards are met.
• Clinical Oversight - The Chair ensures the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based behavioral health services across all clinical settings. They work to expand access to care, improve patient outcomes, and integrate behavioral health within broader healthcare systems.
• Academic and Educational Leadership - The Chair supports and enhances educational programs, including medical student education, residency and fellowship training, and continuing professional development. They promote innovative teaching methods and ensure compliance with accreditation requirements.
• Research and Scholarship - The Chair fosters a culture of inquiry and supports faculty in developing and sustaining research programs. This includes encouraging grant funding, publications, and interdisciplinary collaboration in behavioral health and psychiatric research.
• Faculty Development and Mentorship - The Chair recruits, retains, and develops a diverse and high-performing faculty. They provide mentorship, oversee departmental promotion processes, and support professional growth and leadership development.
• Community and Institutional Engagement - The Chair builds partnerships within the institution and the broader community to address behavioral health needs. They represent the department in institutional leadership and external organizations, advocating for mental health awareness and resources.

Candidate Qualifications:

• Must have an MD, DO or foreign equivalent or terminal degree in Psychology or related field
• Board Certification in Psychiatry, if the candidate is a physician
• Ability to obtain state medical license in West Virginia
• Academic Rank of Associate Professor or Professor or eligibility for appointment at that rank
• Demonstrated leadership experience in academic and clinical settings
• Strong record of clinical excellence, teaching, and scholarly achievement
• Experience in Administrative leadership

About Vandalia Health Charleston Area Medical Center

Vandalia Health Charleston Area Medical Center is a nonprofit, 1,138-bed regional referral center comprising seven hospitals across southern West Virginia, as well as the CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine and the CAMC Foundation. More than 1,500 providers serve on its medical staff.

The CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine is West Virginia's premier medical teaching facility, hosting more than 1,500 learners every day in programs leading to health professions degrees and certifications.

The Institute offers continuing education, outreach, research support and patient education. It also sponsors more than 20 ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs, as well as three pharmacy residencies, a clinical psychology internship and post graduate position, and a School of Nurse Anesthesia (affiliated with the University of Charleston since 2024). Programs designed to meet the needs of the community in which it serves are constantly being developed.

The CAMC Center for Learning and Research, home to the Institute, provides advanced simulation-based clinical training in a realistic environment. The facility includes operating rooms, a critical care room, a labor and delivery suite and multiple inpatient and outpatient training rooms to help learners practice skills and procedures safely.
