Physician, Head of the Adult Intensive Care Unit (SMIA) with an Associate or Full Professor Title

within the Department of interdisciplinary centers (DCI)

The SMIA at CHUV is a leading intensive care Unit, providing specialized care 24 hours a day to a broad population. The Unit treats adult patients with organ failure, multiple trauma, severe burns, or those requiring post-transplant follow-up. With three multidisciplinary units (35 beds) and an intermediate care unit (7 beds), it provides comprehensive technical facilities and highly specialized teams. Recognized for its medical (ISFM) and nursing (EP-SI) training programs, it offers a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment firmly committed to excellence. As a leading institution player in training, education, and research in intensive care medicine, the SMIA leads innovative projects with international reach and actively contributes to the advancement of expertise in the field.

Main missions:

1. Lead the Unit, ensure its proper functioning, organize and manage the development of all highly specialized medical activities within a university adult intensive care unit.
2. Ensure and strengthen the expertise and quality of the unit’s clinical missions and care while developing multidisciplinary and interinstitutional collaborations and synergies in line with the strategic plan of the CHUV.
3. Provide managerial leadership for the unit, in close collaboration with nursing supervisors, departmental teams, and CHUV’s management.
4. Coordinate, lead, and develop high-level clinical and academic research, funded by peer-reviewed external grants and published in high-impact scientific journals.
5. Oversee and lead pre-graduate (as per FBM requirements), post-graduate (ISFM training center, Cat. A1), and continuing training programs in the field, serving as the official head of the discipline.
6. Ensure a strong pipeline of medical and scientific talent, strengthen the discipline’s clinical and academic influence both internally and externally, and collaborate with hospitals in the “Fédération des hôpitaux vaudois (FHV)”, neighboring cantons, throughout Switzerland, and within international networks.

Desired profile:

• Federal Medical Degree (or Mebeko certification required), MD, or MD-PhD.
• Specialist title in critical care medicine (ISFM or Mebeko certification required).
• Extensive clinical experience in adult critical care medicine in a tertiary care hospital.
• Ability to rally teams, stimulate enthusiasm, and enhance the Division's appeal.
• Proven managerial skills in leading a large team, training the next generation of academic physicians, and extensive experience in project management.
• Academic knowledge and expertise at professorial level with proven experience in pre- and post-graduate teaching.
• Ability to establish and lead clinical research programs (with externally funded grants).
• Good knowledge of French (native speaker or C1 level ideal; minimum B2 level with the ability to quickly achieve C1).
• A proven track record of impeccable professional conduct: the successful candidate must demonstrate the highest standards of integrity and full compliance with the legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements associated with the position.
