This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification) Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting The overall responsibilities of the Physiatrists Section Chief include, but are not limited to: The Physiatrists Section Chief is responsible for the direct supervision of all rehabilitation physicians, including those assigned to Mayaguez (MOPC) and Ponce Outpatient Clinics (POPC) under PM&R Service. Is responsible to coordinate the provision of rehabilitation services at other facilities within the VA Caribbean Health Care System (VACHS). The Physiatrists Section Chief, makes clinical and administrative decisions, provides direct patient care, and is actively involved in the decisions that support the management of resources for the Physiatry rehabilitation medical services. As such, the Physiatrists Section Chief is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive healthcare delivery system within their specialty tailored to the needs of the Veterans patient population served and ultimately the quality of care and utilization of health care resources. The Physiatrists Section Chief assists the ACOS for Rehab in the medical services oversight of the following rehabilitation service programs: Polytrauma System of Care, Amputation System of Care, Interdisciplinary Integrated Pain Rehabilitation Program, Comprehensive Inpatient Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Program, Prevention of Amputations for Veterans Everywhere (PAVE), Stroke/Brain Injury, Hand Rehabilitation, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Acute Medical/Surgery Inpatient Consults, Early Mobilization Inpatient Program, Interventional Pain Program and PM&R Residency Program among others. Provides compassionate, appropriate, and effective patient care focused on health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and end-of-life care. Uses clinical judgment, scientific evidence, and best practices to evaluate and continuously improve patient care. Communicates effectively and maintains professional relationships with patients, families, and members of the interdisciplinary health care team. Demonstrates professionalism, ethical practice, respect for diversity, continuous professional development, and effective collaboration with colleagues. Applies knowledge of health care systems and processes to improve the quality and effectiveness of patient care. Performs clinical procedures within approved privileges and ensures timely and accurate documentation in accordance with VA and applicable regulatory requirements. Participates in the Comprehensive Integrated Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Program (CIIRP) and Blind Rehabilitation Service on-call coverage, as assigned, including case review and appropriate supervision of PM&R residents. Integrates VA core values and mission into the rehabilitation and treatment of patients. Performs assigned research and administrative responsibilities. Ensures compliance with applicable legal, regulatory, accreditation, and VA requirements. Completes consultations in a timely manner and ensures results are readily available to referring practitioners. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday - 8:00am - 4:30pm (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs). U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Subject to background/security investigation. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents). Effective May 7, 2025, driver's licenses or state-issued identification cards that are not REAL ID compliant cannot be utilized as an acceptable form of identification for employment. Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation/examination. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). You may be required to serve a probationary period.
