Full description

The VA St. Louis Health Care System is recruiting for Full-time Staff Hospitalist located within Specialty Care Service at our John Cochran Division. The St. Louis VA Health Care System (VAMCSTL) provides cutting-edge surgical and procedural care to veterans. The staff Hospitalist Physician is board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine or an ABIM Subspecialty. Duties include clinical supervision responsibilities for medical inpatient care. The incumbent would work in conjunction with other members of the Hospitalist team to provide evidence-based patient- centered care to our Veterans and helps to lead daily patient care rounds and discharge planning with members of the interdisciplinary team. The staff Hospitalist demonstrates sound decision-making skills in both clinical and administrative areas. In addition, the incumbent serves as a preceptor to Residents, Medical Students and Fellows in his or her specialty area. The Staff Physician Hospitalist shall have a faculty appointment with Washington University in St. Louis or Saint Louis University to provide supervision and teaching to medical residents and students. A strong background in medical education is highly recommended. The Physician collaborates, guides, and supports nurse practitioners assigned to Medicine Service in their respective areas of expertise as appropriate. He or she participates in and attends medical center committees and meetings as assigned by the Chief of Hospitalist, participates in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Quality Improvement (CQI) or System Redesign projects, as assigned by the Chief of Hospitalist. The Physician demonstrates commitment to high quality customer service, including specific measures identified as performance goals by the medical center. The incumbent is expected to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and treatment of disease. The ideal candidate should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills that enable them establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team. The incumbent is expected to adhere to stated policies and provide timely documentation of clinical notes and oversight of resident documentation (e.g. H&P, consult review, discharge summaries, medication reconciliation, etc.). In addition, the incumbent is expected to coordinate and communicate the treatment plan, along with the residents, other Hospitalists, hospital Nurse Practitioner navigators, primary care providers, nursing, social workers, administrative staff, pharmacists, and other subspecialists and ancillary staff. The Hospitalist Physician will help to ensure that high quality patient care is delivered in a resourceful and efficient manner. Other functions to be performed include but are not limited to: Provide inpatient consultation; Monitor and analyze quality and performance improvement data for inpatient units and make recommendations for improvement; Being involved in clinical, educational and research programs for the Medicine Service and with the academic affiliate; Being involved with administration, assignment, education and evaluation of all medical students, and resident programs within the Service; Attending daily inpatient rounds and care conferences if indicated; Managing and coordinating inpatient workload; Taking/sharing call requirements; Facilitating professional development of personnel throughout the Service; Adhering to the Service's workflow processes, procedures, protocol and policies, within regulatory guidelines; Ensuring quality assurance for the Service and the delivery of health care by participating in Service, care line and institutional peer reviews, meeting performance measures, gathering and responding to reports of contact, incident reports, signed statements and customer service complaints; and participating in root cause analyses; Participating in various committees including Pharmacy and Therapeutic, Morbidity and Mortality, Acute Care, Medical Records, Research and Development, Ethics, and Peer review and other committees as well as other required care line and assigned committees in the facility. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification) Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting Work Schedule: variable, nights and weekends U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
