Full description

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is one of the world’s premier cancer centers, committed to exceptional patient care, cutting-edge research, and superb educational programs. The blending of research with patient care is at the heart of everything we do. The institution is a comprehensive cancer center whose purposes are the treatment and control of cancer, the advancement of biomedical knowledge through laboratory and clinical research, and the training of scientists, physicians and other health care workers. The Division of Supportive and Acute Care Services in the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center seeks to recruit an exceptional academic physician and leader to serve as the Chief of the Hospital Medicine Service. The Division of Supportive and Acute Care Services is comprised of five services, including Hospital Medicine, Emergency Care, Integrative Medicine and Wellness, Rapid Diagnosis, Early Detection and Risk Reduction (RaDaR), and Supportive Care that provide whole person, goal-concordant care across the cancer care continuum. The Hospital Medicine Service Hospital Medicine is comprised of an outstanding team of 47 faculty, a combination of daytime hospitalists and nocturnists, who have pioneered the field of “oncology hospital medicine” over the last 15 years. They specialize in delivering comprehensive inpatient medical care 24/7 to adults living with cancer, while also providing pre-operative risk assessment for surgical services and caring for MSK patients who have transitioned to our partner sub-acute care and rehabilitation center, Mary Manning Walsh. The service provides care that is, above all else, compassionate and patient-centered, in addition to being safe and evidence-based. The hospitalists are internal medicine trained and board-certified, and five faculty have additional board certification in hospice and palliative medicine. The 21 daytime hospitalists lead inpatient solid tumor teams staffed by either advanced practice providers or interns and residents, and have primary responsibility for the care of hospitalized patients. Persons are often admitted with complications of cancer-directed therapies or other treatments, exacerbations of comorbid conditions, and/or severe and burdensome symptoms. The teams include a mix of persons living with breast, head and neck, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic, melanoma, sarcoma and thoracic malignancies. The 26 nocturnists, led by their own Deputy Service Chief, admit and care for both solid tumor and hematologic malignancy patients overnight. Faculty are expert in communication skills for persons living with serious illness, management of infectious diseases, treatment of pain and other burdensome symptoms, and the identification and treatment of complications of novel cancer therapeutics, including immunotherapy, CAR-T cell therapy, antibody drug conjugates, and other targeted therapies. They have experience managing rare but increasingly prevalent syndromes, including Cytokine Release Syndrome, Immune Effector Cell-Associated Neurotoxicity Syndrome, and Triple-M, a rare but life-threatening side effect of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy. The Hospital Medicine Service is home to the top-ranked transitional year residency, the rotating internal medicine residency representing three other NYC-based academic medical centers, and the internal medicine chief residency program. The Residency Program Director and Associate Program Director of the 24-person transitional year program are both hospitalists, along with the Director of the rotating internal medicine and chief residency programs. The Director of Medical Student Education for the Department of Medicine is also a hospitalist. Clinical Innovation in Hospital Medicine includes a program in Point of Care Ultrasound with a specific focus on nocturnist faculty who need facility with ultrasound to conduct urgent studies overnight. Hospitalists also have enterprise-wide leadership roles in Quality and Safety, Informatics, and Inpatient Operations. The Service Chief will report to the Head of the Division of Supportive and Acute Care Services and will have programmatic oversight and responsibility for the Service and faculty. The Service Chief supports the recruitment and professional development of faculty and the development of programs that align with MSK’s strategic plan. S/he will work to shape the strategic and programmatic priorities for the Service, and will oversee the clinical operations, talent acquisition and retention, research, philanthropy, professional development, mentorship, and teaching. The Hospital Medicine Service faculty partner with and support other physicians spanning multiple services in the Department of Medicine as well as other Departments at MSK including Surgery, Radiation Oncology, Psychiatry, Anesthesia, Radiology, as well as colleagues from Nursing, Case Management, Pharmacy, and Social Work. MSK's inpatient footprint will experience rapid growth in the coming years, with the state-of-the-art Kenneth C. Griffin Pavilion adding an additional 206 inpatient beds via a two-story bridge in 2030. Programmatic growth is also expected in the use of observation status, transitional care both to home and hospice, and novel programs to reduce readmissions. There are innumerable opportunities for the successful candidate to partner with clinicians and researchers across MSK to investigate new strategies for diagnostics, management of complications of novel therapeutics, and care delivery innovation. There is ample opportunity to grow the research portfolio of this service which might include an emphasis on diagnostics and therapeutics, risk assessment, care delivery innovation, implementation science, and pragmatic trials. Qualified candidates should be physicians with board certification in internal medicine. The ideal candidate will have: A vision for how the skills and talents of hospitalists and nocturnists can support MSK’s strategic plan in the realms of clinical care, research, and education. National recognition as a program leader, educator, and/or a funded program of clinical, translational, or population science research in diagnostics, therapeutics, risk assessment, care delivery, implementation science, pragmatic trials, or other relevant content area; Eligibility for licensure in New York and New Jersey. MSK has a strong commitment to enhancing the diversity of its faculty and staff. Applicants from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply. MSK offers competitive salaries and benefits. Interested applicants should send curriculum vitae and letter of interest to Valentina Salkow, MBA , Associate Director, Office of the Chief Physician Executive ( salkowv@mskcc.org ) and copy Brandon Warren, MPA, Associate Director, Division of Supportive and Acute Care Services, Department of Medicine at warrenb@mskcc.org .
