Medical Director - Hospitalist Program The program supports an average daily census of approximately 100 patients through a 24-hour coverage model built around dedicated rounding, day-admitting, swing, and nocturnist shifts, with a shared equity pool compensation structure designed for fairness, transparency, and sustainable workload distribution. Position Overview El Camino Health Medical Network is seeking a Board Certified/Board Eligible Internal Medicine or Family Medicine physician to serve as Medical Director for its newly internalized Hospitalist Program at the Mountain View campus. The Medical Director provides clinical and operational leadership for the hospitalist group, serves as the primary physician liaison to hospital administration and Medical Staff leadership, and maintains an active clinical panel within the program.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day clinical and administrative leadership for the hospitalist group, including oversight of scheduling, admission caps, and the overflow/surge protocol
- Serve as the accountable physician leader for hospitalist program performance, including length of stay, readmissions, mortality O/E, and core measure compliance
- Partner with the CMO/CQO on quality governance reporting relevant to the hospitalist service line (Vizient, NHSN, CMS-tracked metrics)
- Recruit, onboard, mentor, and evaluate hospitalist physicians; lead peer feedback and performance conversations in partnership with ECHMG leadership
- Maintain and refine the equity pool compensation model, rotation fairness, and nocturnist pay parity in collaboration with administration
- Chair or co-chair regular hospitalist group meetings; represent the program in Medical Staff committees, and relevant quality/safety committees
- Serve as first point of escalation for clinical coverage issues, admission disputes, and interdepartmental coordination with the Emergency Department, ICU, and specialty services
- Champion a culture of patient safety, evidence-based practice, and continuous improvement consistent with El Camino Health's quality priorities
- Maintain an active clinical panel within the rounding/admitting/swing rotation, consistent with allocated administrative time
Qualifications
- MD or DO from an accredited medical school
- Board Certified/Board Eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine
- Active or eligible California medical license
- Minimum 3-5 years of hospitalist experience; prior medical director, lead physician, or other formal physician leadership experience strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to lead physician teams through organizational change or program launch
- Strong working knowledge of inpatient quality metrics (LOS, readmissions, HACs, mortality O/E) and core measure/SEP-1 compliance
- Excellent communication, conflict-resolution, and cross-functional collaboration skills
- Commitment to physician-led governance and a collaborative, team-based leadership style
