Chief, UCSF Health Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Description The Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco seeks an outstanding physician of unique vision, enthusiasm, and experience to serve as Chief for the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The Division Chief provides leadership and management to 46 UCSF faculty members working across all UCSF Health sites to support the department mission and goals for patient care, research, education, and public service. Candidates must have a distinguished record of scholarly achievement, strong commitment to patient care, and dedication to graduate medical education. The Division is home to nationally recognized clinical and research programs, including the Liver Transplant Program, the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine, and centers of excellence in gastrointestinal motility, integrative hepatology, interventional endoscopy, and hereditary gastrointestinal cancer, among others. Key Responsibilities of the Division Chief · Provide strategic leadership for the Division's clinical programs, driving growth, operational excellence, and innovation in alignment with the UCSF Health strategic plan. · Lead faculty academic affairs by establishing clear expectations, performance goals, and accountability across the mission areas of research, education, clinical care, scholarship, and service. · Recruit, mentor, develop, and retain outstanding faculty, staff, and trainees, fostering an environment that supports professional growth, collaboration, and academic success. · Ensure the continued excellence and growth of the Division's fellowship programs. · Provide fiscal leadership through oversight of the Division's budget, business operations, and financial planning to ensure long-term sustainability, effective advocacy and stewardship of resources, advancement of philanthropic initiatives, and strategic investment in future growth. · Advance the Division's national and international reputation by promoting excellence in basic, translational, and clinical research, increasing extramural funding, and supporting high-impact scholarly publications. · Foster a culture of engagement, inclusion, collaboration, accountability, and well-being that promotes high morale and organizational excellence. The UCSF Division Chief also will work closely with the division chiefs and faculty of the two affiliated academic institutions (Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and San Francisco VA Medical Center) to strengthen clinical, educational, and research partnerships across all affiliated sites and to support and enhance the Division's joint fellowship programs in gastroenterology, hepatology, liver transplantation, advanced endoscopy, and inflammatory bowel disease. Qualified candidates must have an MD degree or equivalent, be board-certified or eligible in gastroenterology or hepatology, and have licensure/eligibility by the Medical Board of California. The Chief will be appointed at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in either the In Residence or Clinical X series. The ideal candidate should have a strong track record of scholarship, publication, teaching, and clinical excellence and have demonstrated leadership and mentorship skills and success. The Division Chief must demonstrate the leadership qualities necessary to succeed in a complex, matrixed academic health system, including the ability to build collaborative partnerships across UCSF and its affiliated institutions. The successful candidate will be an effective communicator and relationship builder who can advance the Division's mission by engaging faculty, staff, trainees, community physicians, hospital and health system leaders, and donors.
