This hospital serves as a center of excellence in behavioral health care and provides vital training opportunities for the next generation of clinicians.

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide clinical leadership for this innovative hospital. As a Tufts Medicine employee, the CMO will play a crucial role in ensuring high-quality patient care, driving clinical innovation, and fostering strong academic and community partnerships. The CMO will work in close collaboration with the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to align medical operations with the hospital’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities.

The primary reporting relationship is with the Department Chair of Psychiatry for Tufts Medicine.

How you’ll transform Patient Care:

  • Be responsible for the quality, efficiency, and management of delivering services within the facility.
  • Define protocols and assist in decision-making pertaining to the medical and clinical care of patients.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight of all medical services, ensuring high-quality, evidence-based care that aligns with the mission of Tufts Medicine.
  • Develop and implement clinical protocols, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, Joint Commission accreditation, and best practices in behavioral health care.
  • Oversee patient safety, quality improvement, and performance initiatives, ensuring the highest standards of care and patient outcomes.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the medical staff, hospital administration, and Tufts Medicine leadership.
  • Champion a culture of clinical excellence, patient safety, and continuous improvement.

Medical Staff Oversight & Development:

  • Provide direct patient care and assist other departments with direct interactions with physician's staff.
  • Directly supervise other professional clinical staff, as well as administrative or support staff.
  • Serve as a liaison between the medical staff and other staff within the facility, division, corporate staff, and organizational leadership.
  • Lead, recruit, and mentor a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, medical staff, and advanced practice providers, ensuring an engaged and high-performing workforce.
  • Oversee medical staff credentialing, privileging, and ongoing professional practice evaluations.
  • Ensure compliance with medical staff by-laws and promote collaboration between physicians, nursing, and administrative leadership.
  • Foster a culture of medical education and training, supporting students, residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals in partnership with Tufts University School of Medicine.

Operational & Strategic Leadership:

  • Monitor and supervise assigned staff for adherence to established medical and clinical policies.
  • Provide backup call coverage.
  • Serve in a teaching capacity for the training and development of other personnel.
  • Secure physical exam and history from patients.
  • Request appropriate diagnostic testing, clinical evaluation, and prescribe medications and treatments.
  • Assist in the management of behavioral or mental health problems of patients and maintain current clinical medical records in accordance with federal or state regulation and industry practice, as well as facility, clinic, or corporate policies and procedures.
  • Develop organizational goals and objectives and devise strategies and policies to meet those goals.
  • Develop, approve, implement, and update the general policies, protocols, and procedures of the facility.
  • Collaborate with the CEO and executive leadership team to develop and execute the hospital’s strategic plan, ensuring integration with Tufts Medicine’s overall behavioral health strategy.
  • Oversee clinical resource management, utilization review, and medical staff operations to optimize care delivery and financial sustainability.
  • Partner with Tufts Medicine leadership and external stakeholders to strengthen referral networks and enhance the hospital’s reputation as a premier center for behavioral health care.
  • Support the development and expansion of outpatient services and community-based behavioral health programs to improve care continuity.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local regulations, including CMS, Joint Commission, HIPAA, and other relevant standards.
  • Oversee medical risk management, addressing patient safety concerns and leading efforts to minimize clinical risk and liability.
  • Lead emergency preparedness efforts and ensure medical staff readiness for crisis situations.

Who you are:

  • You have a Medical Degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution and are licensed to practice medicine in the state of Massachusetts.
  • You are board certificated in Psychiatry or a relevant behavioral health specialty.
  • You have a minimum of 10 years of clinical experience, with at least 5 years of experience in a leadership role within a behavioral health setting (CMO, Medical Director, or similar executive role).
  • You have demonstrated experience in medical staff leadership, hospital operations, and strategic planning.
  • You have a strong understanding of behavioral health regulations, quality improvement methodologies, and risk management strategies.
