Full description

RWJBarnabas Health is seeking an Addiction Medicine Physician to provide comprehensive care for pregnant, postpartum, and parenting patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions. Care will be delivered through outpatient visits and telehealth across the preconception, prenatal, and postpartum periods.

The successful candidate will work closely with obstetric, pediatric, behavioral health, and community-based partners to provide evidence-based, trauma-informed, and non-stigmatizing care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and develop individualized treatment plans for pregnant and postpartum patients with substance use disorders.
  • Prescribe and manage medications for substance use disorders during pregnancy and lactation, including buprenorphine and other evidence-based therapies.
  • Coordinate methadone treatment with opioid treatment programs.
  • Provide screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment, and outpatient withdrawal management when appropriate.
  • Deliver in-person and telehealth services in accordance with clinical, regulatory, and organizational requirements.
  • Coordinate prenatal, delivery, postpartum, pain management, and newborn care with Obstetrics, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Pediatrics, Neonatology, Midwifery, and Lactation services.
  • Educate patients on neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, breastfeeding, overdose prevention, naloxone use, contraception, and family planning.
  • Evaluate co-occurring medical and behavioral health conditions and coordinate specialty referrals as needed.
  • Provide trauma-informed care and connect patients with social services, peer recovery specialists, home-visiting programs, community health workers, and other support resources.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and toxicology testing, review the state Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, and maintain timely clinical documentation.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary case conferences, quality improvement initiatives, peer review, and perinatal care planning.
  • Fulfill applicable confidentiality, mandated reporting, and Plans of Safe Care requirements.

Candidate Requirements

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited residency.
  • Board certification in Addiction Medicine through ABPM or AOA, or Addiction Psychiatry through ABPN.
  • Current unrestricted DEA registration for Schedules II–V.
  • Clinical experience treating substance use disorders, including the management of medications for opioid use disorder.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based perinatal addiction treatment, trauma-informed care, controlled-substance regulations, and applicable reporting requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary care model and communicate with patients and families in a respectful, non-stigmatizing manner.

Fellowship training in Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry is preferred. Additional consideration will be given to candidates with experience treating pregnant and postpartum patients, providing outpatient or telehealth-based addiction care, collaborating with opioid treatment programs and child welfare systems, or participating in perinatal quality improvement initiatives. New fellowship graduates are encouraged to apply.
