Real Experiences from Private Practice General Dentist Physicians

"Orthodontic Resident moonlighting as general dentist working 1-2 Saturdays per month for extra cash. (Website wouldn't let me put less than 1500 hrs/ year) Flexible make my own schedule, and office staff put patients in my column. Direct restorative only, fixed hourly so, not worried about producing a ton. "

"Work 5 days a week. Sometimes sat or sun to work on administrative duties. I hate it because even though I’m making good income but I don’t have a family life. Recently cut my days to 4 and started doing other investments. I’m blessed with being very good at what I do and have very extensive after grad training. My fees are average and I didn’t seek money but just enjoyed dentistry and the business and it kept growing. But my health took a hit when everything I do is dentistry. Now I’m cutting back. "

"Im a partner in a Comfort Dental franchise, its kind of a mix between DSO and Private practice. It’s generally 4, 6 hour shifts (either 7:30am - 1:30pm or 1:30pm - 7:30pm) and 1, 12 hour shift a week. I can work as little or many shifts as I would like as long as it doesn’t create issues with the other owner partners. We also have the ability to take off as much or little time as we want… as long as we have a doctor there to keep the office open. "

"Good work life balance. Stress full at times. I like to work and run a busy practice. I have a good working relationship with my employees. I put in about an hour a day extra work at home for practice management. Area of work is semi rural. Less competition. "

"The first year I owned the clinic there was no work-life balance. I would often show up at my office at 7:30 a.m. and be there until 10:30 p.m. I very often worked 6 to 7 days a week the entire year and only took 2 weeks off. Things have improved in the last 6 months. I have been working 4 days a week and have my weekends back. There is still a lot of stress involved with managing the clinic and the staff. I now have enough trained staff in place to allow me to focus mostly on treating patients."

"5 days a week 10-5, solo doctor in Medicaid based practice. See ~30 patients a day. Lots of flexibility in scheduling and procedures. Bread and butter dentistry with occasional Invisalign/implant therapy. Most days are smooth and no admin. "
New York, New York2 years38 hrs/wk$665k
"1 Work every week Monday to Thursday (30 working hours) and 2 Fridays and 1 Saturday a month for 4 hours. I get paid on gross production numbers. I do all aspects of general dentistry, but I have a network of specialists I will refer to when needed. As an associate I have a great work life balance with very little stress. I average at least 4 weeks off a year and my boss lets me take off whenever no questions asked (unless there’s a true conflict). Boss pays for all my license renewal fees, 3k of CE, malpractice and medical insurance premiums. Last year he gave me $25k in bonuses just because he values my work so in 2024 I made $355k. I rarely get called for emergencies. I’ve been at my practice for 6 years and have maxed out my 401K every year. I used to get 3% match, now it is 5.5% match."
